Otherwise, they preserve most of the tale of a spice grocer with mystical powers and a superheroish origin story. On the one hand, Chadha and Berges change romantic bodice-ripping pirates to dangerous ones on the other, they have deleted the subplot about the battered woman Lalita and transformed the romantic lead from an exotic man named Raven to a more conventional "Doug." The adaptation of Sunnyvale writer Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni's 1997 book gains in glossiness what it loses in grit. Unfortunately, the film that introduced her to the west, Bride & Prejudice, failed to make her as popular in America as she is in India. The author has tried to focus on too many issues at the same time, at time confusing the reader.Īvailable on Amazon in both paperback and kindle.WITH EYES like smoky topazes, and lips that make Angelina Jolie look pursed-mouthed, Aishwarya Rai has one of the most celebrated faces on the planet. Through Jagjit, she brings the story of Bullying in schools and the consequences. Through Geeta, she brings out the turmoil of second generation who is more American than Indian. Also, through her she narrates the life of immigrants. The author brings out nicely her inner turmoil, especially when she falls in love. I finished it in around a week, which is quite unusual for me, as once I get hooked to a story, I can’t put the book down. Her books have won many accolades and this particular “The mistress of Spices” has been made into a movie, starring Aishwarya Rai.

“Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni” I had come across this author through Blogchatter A to Z, 2018 where she was a mentor. Later never comes, so I have decided to review the book on the day I finish. I had been reading a lot lately, but somehow never reviewed any and left it for later.
